Eco Friendly Hotels?

'Green Travel: The World's Best Eco-Lodges & Earth-friendly Hotels'
(Fodor's Travel Publications, 318 pages, $21.95)
Capsule review: A green guide to world travel
Overall grade: A-

Travel is becoming a green conundrum, with the atmospheric impacts of jets as well as the impact of visitors on unspoiled places. Fodor's steps up with this thorough new guide filled with color photographs.

Particularly helpful are separate sections, on green-colored paper, that cover current enviro quandaries: whether to use carbon offsets; whether to support beggars; even whether to travel great distances or just stay local.

Each lodging includes an "eco file" that rates its environmental and social impacts. Essays by writers discuss personal ecotravels. Only drawback is scarce North American listings.
